My goodness!

What a slacker I've become. Work exploded the past month, plus the added stress and general busy-ness of the holidays... well, let's just say this blog is not the only thing I'm WAY behind on!

2009 is coming to a close in two days. In some ways, it's been a wonderful year. In others, it's been bittersweet, stressful, and even depressing.

- A relationship ended. I thought it would last forever; otherwise, I wouldn't have said "I Do." I truly believe we learn from each relationship and experience, and that's certainly true in this case as well. I will forever be grateful for the 8 years we spent together. Some of my fondest memories took place during that time, and they -- and he -- will remain in my heart always.

- Another relationship began. Some might think the timing was suspect or it's moving too fast, but I know -- and those closest to me know -- the truth. I'm reminded of an expression I heard several years ago. "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." The same holds true in this instance. Those who know me know the truth about what is transpiring and when/how/why. Those who wish me harm or spread falsehoods about me... well, screw them.

- I severed ties with some people I had once been very, very close to. Originally, it broke my heart to do so, but their lack of follow-up since then proves that I was right to do so. Screw them too. :)

- My work situation was very up-and-down all year. Time will tell on this one. Time will tell.

- Because of some of the above experiences, I became a bit more jaded and cautious. But because of the addition of someone completely wonderful in my life, I also became more patient. More confident. More hopeful. More relaxed. More at peace with myself and my future and all the opportunities before me.

Whatever 2009 brought your way, I hope you can look back at it and also be at peace with yourself and your experiences. Learn from them. Embrace them, even if they were unpleasant. They are helping you evolve into the person you continue to become.

Be well, friends. And happy, happy new year.

The meaning of life

Live honorably
Love with your whole heart
Be kind
Take care of those you love
And leave the world a little better than you found it

The rest is really quite meaningless, if you think about it.

I almost died on Sunday

I know that sounds overly dramatic, but it's true. I've now cheated death three times, and the third was just 2 days ago.

On Saturday after a pre-race run with the group, several of us dove into the Atlantic (me first, of course) in our running clothes. It was about 60 and sunny outside... and 60 in the water. Cool but oh-so-refreshing.

Sunday after the race, several of us decided to go in again, and this time we even took a minute to change into bathing suits. The air temperature was even warmer on Sunday, which made the water seem colder. Within a minute of diving in, Missy and I noticed that we'd drifted quite a bit to the right of the group. We commented on it but didn't worry a bit. Dave and Dan were in the water, much shallower than we were. I swam back toward Dave, taunted him a bit (called him a wusbag, if I recall), and swam back out to hang with Maureen and Brandy in the deeper water. Maureen and I got to talking, but we noticed that every fourth word or so a wave would crash on our heads.

"How are you doing?" CRASH!
"Oh! So I didn't tell you..." CRASH!
"It's probably better that..." CRASH!
"... do you feel about that?" CRASH!
"I know, and..." CRASH!

I suggested coming in a bit to get away from the waves, but we were unsuccessful. I then suggested swimming in, since both of us are strong swimmers. After about 5 minutes (honestly, I don't know how long it was), I noticed that we hadn't made ANY progress. Brandy was still a bit deeper than we were, and we motioned to her to come in a bit. The folks who had been in the shallow water were now standing on the beach, watching us... from really, really far away. We had drifted considerably... to the right and much, much deeper than we realized. We were caught in a ripcurrent. A really bad one.

I have to admit that I started to panic. I was so tired from the race and from fighting the water that I hyperventilated a bit. Maureen and Brandy were very relaxed, and even though I didn't believe Brandy when she said, "We're making progress... It's just slow," I accepted it and chose to focus on her calming influence.

One thing you should know: I can't float. Never have been able to. Within 5 seconds of trying to float, my legs fall straight down and I'm vertical. So floating wasn't an option. I flipped onto my back anyway and tried to backstroke so that I could keep my head out of the water; however, not being able to see the shoreline freaked me out even more, so I flipped back over. At this point, Maureen pointed out that Kelly was with us too.

I started a frantic, half-assed breaststroke so that I could move toward the shoreline. I turned around a few times to check on the other girls' progress, but every time I did I lost ground. After a few minutes, I decided to just focus on getting out of the water and THEN checking on the others. I can't tell you how guilty I felt at abandoning them and trying to save myself. The guilt was almost as overwhelming as the terror. Almost. As Dave pointed out yesterday, self-preservation is the strongest influence.

Dave said I did my pathetic breaststroke (which is when he knew I was in trouble) for about 10 minutes. That was after 10 or so minutes of trying to float/tread/swim in with Maureen and Brandy. I was so tired, and I did think at two points, "I can see where people give up. It would be so easy to just... give... up." Thankfully, the urge wasn't strong... but if I'd been out there any longer, I am not convinced I wouldn't have given up. Of course, then I would have been hypothermic within a few minutes because I wouldn't have been generating any body heat by moving. Lose, lose.

Once I got close enough that I knew I was within Dave's earshot, I called out one pitiful word to him.

"Help."

Within seconds, he had thrown off his towel and jumped in the water to help me. At this point, I have to rely on his memory, because I have no recollection of what happened. He said he swam toward me. Once he was close enough to reach me, he extended his hand so I could grab it, then pulled me in close to him. We were still in water way deeper than our heads, so he swam/pulled me toward the shore a little more, then shoved me by pushing my ankle away from him toward the beach. After a few tries, I hit land on my hands and knees. (This is where my memory resumes.) I was so weak that the waves were knocking me over and the sand was cutting my knees... but so grateful to be touching bottom that I didn't care. I stayed on my hands and knees for a minute and then got up. A bit wobbly, but very, very grateful to be alive.

Brandy and Maureen had floated a bit until they got out of the riptide's grasp, then swam in. The last one out was Kelly, and Lora and I waded in to give her a hand when she got close enough to shore.

My emotions since Sunday have been all over the place. Fear. Absolute terror. Gratitude that the ocean gave me back. Guilt that I abandoned my friends to save myself. Sorrow that I caused so much worry to so many people. Shame.

But mostly gratitude.

Seagirls forever.

- Yankees fans.
- Credit card companies.
- Mean people.
- Intolerant people.
- Attention whores.
- Backstabbing people.
- People who stalk their exes through the Internet.
- People who don't RSVP to invitations.

154

That's how many birthday wishes I received on Facebook. That does not include emails, phone calls, e-cards, shout-outs on kickrunners, cards, flowers, and other assorted good wishes.

I spent much of the day with tears in my eyes, thankful for all the wonderful friends I have both near and far. I am truly grateful for all the good people in my life. People I've known for 40+ years and those who are newer friends. People who are related to me by blood or by choice. People who, in some cases, came out of the woodwork to wish me a happy birthday yesterday. People I've met recently through work or volunteering who went out of their way to make my day so very special.

I don't know what I've done to deserve such attention. Such support. Such love. I don't know how I can ever repay everyone's kindness, not only yesterday but in general. But I promise you this: I will do my very best to treat everyone as well as they treat me.

I love you guys.

Be A Champion

Last night I fell asleep watching the game. (My sofa is just TOO comfy.) Luckily, I woke up in the bottom of the 8th inning... just in time to see the big comeback.

Love me some J-Roll. And loved this post-game rush to the field.

Go Phillies!!!!!!!!

Cupcake porn!

I am in the wrong business.

One dozen cupcakes = $25. Seriously? $25? For CUPCAKES????

I went in asking for eight cupcakes to take to a friend's house as a hostess gift, but they had only the separated plastic boxes pictured above. As the woman filled the box with my selected cupcakes, I started to realize how crappy it would look to have 8 cupcakes in a box designed to hold 12. It would have looked as though I ate 4 of the cupcakes on my way to their house!

So of course I bought 12 cupcakes. For the low, low price of 25 freaking dollars.

What a ripoff.

Now that's dedication!

Yesterday when I left work I noticed that my left rear tire was very low. When I left the Y a few hours later, it was even worse, so I drove right to Pep Boys and walked home from there. Since I got there shortly before 8 p.m., they told me they wouldn't look at my car until this morning. I didn't think much of it... until I remembered that I was subbing for Michelle's 6 a.m. boot camp class this morning! Oops!

The alarm went off early (I can't call it bright and early because it was d.a.r.k.), and I dragged my sorry butt out of bed. Luckily, it was fairly warm this morning, but it was raining! So by the time I ran to the Y for class -- with my water bottle in one hand and my class CDs in the other -- I was pretty drenched.

One girl in the back of the room hesitantly said, "Go easy on us! This is my first time." I laughed and said, "I just ran through the rain in COMPLETE DARKNESS to get here. No way it's going to be easy!" One of my Pilates regulars griped, "Uh oh. That doesn't sound good!"

Later in the class, I gave some positioning cues to the new girl in the back. Since I didn't know her name, I referred to her by the color of her t-shirt... Greenie! :) She laughed and replied, "That's OK. I won't tell you what they called you!!!"

Bwwaaaaaahahahahahaha! I love my evil reputation at the gym!

I know I already posted it on Facebook...

My big fat Greek family. In all our fabulousness. :) (In actuality, that's about 1/25th of my family, but you have to admit it's an obvious caption.)

Best week EVAH!

Monday night = Pearl Jam concert
Tuesday night = Pearl Jam concert

These were the first two shows of their current tour, and we got to see them in their hometown of Seattle!! Here are some of the pics my brother took Tuesday night.

Thursday night = U2 concert at Giants Stadium with 60,000 of our closest friends

If you squint, you can kinda see Bono in this one. OK, maybe not. :)

Saturday night = my friend Michelle's wedding at the beach

What a whirlwind! Two cross-country flights, three concerts, and one wedding in a mere seven days.

This week isn't too shabby, either. A Flyers pre-season game tomorrow night, the NL East clinching Phillies game Wednesday, and my 25th high school reunion this weekend. (How is it possible it's been 25 years???? Good grief.)

Diamondman Tri

After my success at the Northeast Triathlon (first in my age group, surprisingly!), I decided to sign up for another tri before the end of the season. The Diamondman at Lums Pond was the only one that fit into my schedule, so even though I wasn't excited about swimming in Lums Pond (everyone said "Ick!" when I told them!), I registered. Luckily, I was able to convince my mom and brother to come cheer for me. It was the first time they'd come to any of my athletic events since college (and we know that was a LONG time ago, folks!).

The distances were odd -- .6 mile swim, 17.5 mile bike, and 2 mile run. Not a typical sprint. Even stranger was the crazy long run between the swim and the transition area: more than a quarter mile!

The swim was fine. Honestly, the worst part was walking through the water to get to the start buoy. I was reminded of how much I loathe swimming in ponds and lakes. All that squishy mud/sand/scum on the bottom just skeeved. me. out. Blech. Once I started swimming, I was fine. Until it was time to put my feet back down and run out of the water. :)

As soon as I came out of the water, and even before I got my swim cap completely off, I heard a booming male voice cheering for me. It was Antwain, the Fast Cats coach! And right next to him, beaming from ear to ear, was little Xavier, one of the members of the team! I couldn't believe it! They got up so early on a Sunday to come cheer... for me??? Really???? As I ran, I shouted out to X, "My mom's up here! She's in blue!" He sprinted next to me, and as we reached my mom I called out to her, "They're from the Club!!!"

As I approached the transition area, I heard more cheers for me. It was Rahdeein and Ronyell, two more Fast Cats!! By the time I stripped off my wetsuit (water temp = 69 degrees, brrrr!), all four kids and Antwain were hanging over the fencing talking to me and giving me encouragement for the rest of the race.

I took off on the bike with tears in my eyes, feeling like the luckiest girl in the world, and saw a County police car within the first mile or two. The cops were all over the bike course. By some stroke of luck, I looked over my shoulder as I passed by. It was Joe, one of the three County officers I know! Another fan cheering for me! Best race EVAH!

I felt good on the bike but still came in about a minute or two slower than I expected to. Oh well. The bike course was a figure eight, so I got to see Joe again, then as I passed by transition I heard my HUGE cheering section -- Antwain and the kids, Mom, my brother, and my friend Jen and her friend Christine who came to cheer for a few of us. Oh, and Shaggy, who was tended to by my brother while I raced. :)

By the time I finished biking, I was desperate to pee. As always. Next year, in addtion to working on my biking, I need to work on my peeing, apparently. Again, Antwain and the kids hung over the fencing and talked to me as I changed my shoes and racked my bike, and then I was off.

Within 2 minutes of the run, I passed the portapotties and decided to sacrifice my time for my comfort. It took me 57 seconds to relieve myself and get back on the course, and I knew my goal of a 15-minute run was shot. Oh well again. So I just ran as fast as I could and hoped for the best. At the turnaround I was at 8:34, so without the break I was really close to my 7:30 goal pace. Rats!

With about a quarter mile to go, I saw Joe one more time and got some support from him... but as I rounded the turn to the chute I heard HUGE cheers for me! For ME! Absolutely the best feeling in the world!

(All times by my watch)
SWIM = 19:05
T1 = 5:55
BIKE = 56:42
T2 = :52
RUN = 15:34 (yes, I ran the 2nd mile in 7:00 exactly!)
TOTAL = 1:38:11

3/16 in my age group
12/96 women
61/214 overall

YEAH!!!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you Mom, Anthony, Antwain, Xavier, Rahdeein, Ronyell, and Joe. Those cheers, fist pumps, and waves really helped!

I didn't mean to...

... but I ran Monday's intended race last night on my own. Just over 4 miles in 30:59!

Clearly, my 5K PR is way soft. Maybe I'll attempt a new one as a substitute for speedwork over the next few weeks.

In other news, I'm racing this weekend (speaking of speedwork!) -- the Diamondman Sprint Triathlon on Sunday. It's an odd distance: .6 mile swim, 17.5 mile bike, and 2 mile run. This will be the first time my mother and brother have seen me race, assuming they VTFU and get out of bed early enough. :) Mom was a bit unruffled when I told her how early she needs to be there.

More importantly, today is the 8th anniversary of 9/11. Let us never, ever forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the courage shown on that day. Tell your loved ones that you love them today, and say a prayer (if you are so inclined) for the brave men and women who are fighting for our freedom to this day.

God Bless America.

Run 4 Mike's Kids... literally

The second annual Run 4 Mike's Kids 4-miler was held Monday morning. Last year, I smashed my goal of sub-32 minutes with a 31:06. I knew I'd have a tough time matching that this year (my speedwork has been nonexistent), but I was going to give it my best.

The Fast Cats cross-country team used the race as their Monday practice. It was AWESOME to see my kids there in their uniforms and Fast Cats t-shirts, all running across the grass in Rockford Park to hug Miss Alexis and shower me with love. Truly, truly the best job ever. I adore these kids.

When the gun sounded, I took off at what I thought was a fast but comfortable pace. I was right behind IronEx and Amy B, who ended up running perfect 7:30s for all four miles, so I was on track for a 31:xx. The Fast Cats of course went out WAY too fast, and I started passing some of them as they slowed from all-out sprint to a more moderate pace. About 3/4 of a mile into the race, still in the park, I passed one of the Cats, a new boy named Nyjere. At a Fast Cats practice I attended two weeks ago, Nyjere, a girl named Gionni, and I got hopelessly lost in the trails and ended up running/walking our own little route until we made it back to the group.

Nyjere was hurting. Bad. He was panting, and his form already looked a little sloppy. I urged him to slow down a bit to get his breathing under control, reminding him that he still had a long way to go.

Me: Hey buddy. Slow down a little, OK?
Nyjere: [grunt]
Me: This is a long race, sweetie. You have a long way to go, so you have to pace yourself.
Nyjere: [panting]
Me: You OK?
Nyjere: [grunt]
Me: Sweetie, do you want me to stay with you?
Nyjere: Yes, please.

So I did. I slowed my pace and gave up on my own race without giving it a second thought.

Within another half mile, we saw Gionni, still running but obviously having a hard time with pacing. I told Nyjere, "We'll pick up Gionni and run with her the rest of the way, OK?" He nodded.

The three of us ran the rest of the way together, until the very end when I told them to finish strong and sprint it in. Our splits were something like 8:33, 9:45, 11:31, and 10:15. Four miles in 40:04.

Run 4 Mike's Kids really WAS for the kids this year.

I'm so indecisive

Months ago, the Outer Banks Marathon was suggested as a fall meet-up for my running group. I immediately decided to go to run the half marathon and signed up accordingly.

When Voodoo died, I decided to VTFU and upgrade to the full marathon in his honor. Since then, my running has been sporadic, at best. This week's total, thus far, as an example: zero miles.

I also was recruited to be a volunteer coach for the new Fast Cats cross-country team. Practices are three evenings a week, which clearly cuts into my running time.

I also signed up for another sprint triathlon on September 13, after my great success last weekend. Quite frankly, triathlons are WAY more fun than just running; however, by their very nature, they require quite a bit of cross-training.

With work demands, some upcoming travel (just long weekends, but still), my volunteer commitments, and the unrealistic pressure I always put on myself, I cracked last night. Tearfully, I told a friend on the phone, "I can't even find the time to run 5 miles! How the eff am I going to do those 20s??"

I am clearly not cut out to run marathons. Every time I try to commit to one, I back out. Now I know not to commit, at least. I'll stick to triathlons and half marathons and shorter races.

And so, I emailed the OBX race director and active.com this morning and asked them to switch me back to the half marathon.

I feel like a failure. I feel so humiliated. I feel like a big loser (and not in a positive reality show kinda way).

However, my stress level decreased significantly last night when I made that decision. What also helped was the amazing pep talk I received on the phone. You know who you are, and I absolutely love you and can't thank you enough for your support and your valued advice.

Let's think of words...

... that rhyme with Vick.

Hick
Thick
Sick
Dick
Prick
Inconsistent, overrated, undeserving, sadistic, evil, inhumane piece of shit.

Shoot, that doesn't rhyme.

Oh well.

VTFU

My friend Joe - a runner, boxer, writer, animal lover, advice giver, nurturer, dreadlock wearer, beer drinker, and all-around wonderful person - died in his sleep sometime Thursday night or Friday morning. He was 37.

Known as Voodoojunkie on kickrunners.com, Joe was one of the kindest, gentlest, most thoughtful people I knew. I had the great fortune to meet him at a few races and spend time with him. He was always quick to lend support to new runners or anyone, regardless of skill or experience, who needed a mental boost. He added countless words and expressions to our group's lexicon: by the Gods, sweating like 10 whole men, bio-solid, I reckon, and, especially, Cowboy the F Up (or CTFU for short).

Since Monday when word spread about his passing, it's become VTFU -- Voo the F Up.

It's a reminder to pull up your bootstraps when times are tough. It's a motivational tool to get you through a tough run or hard day or difficult time in your life.

It's now a mantra.

Joe was taken from us much, much too soon. His impact, however, will be felt for years to come. At least three or four of my running friends give him full credit for their dedication to the sport. He was the one who reached out to them, made them feel welcome in our little cyber-group, and offered just the right words of encouragement to keep them from giving up.

We feel a huge loss. A hole that cannot possibly be filled. Our hearts are heavy, and our tears are plentiful.

But how lucky were we to have him in our lives for even a brief period?

Voo, I will miss you constantly, but I know you're smiling down on all of us from that big finish line in the sky. We'll meet again, my friend. When we do, I will be able to tell you in person how very much you have meant to me.

Rest in peace, sweet Voodoo.

Cramming

My A race is in less than four weeks. Last year at this race -- the Northeast Triathlon, my only Olympic distance tri so far -- I vowed to never, ever do it again. It was painful. It was hot. It was hilly. It was LONG.

It was horrible.

After the initial self-pity, I re-examined my vow. I knew I could improve on my overall time. I knew where I could push and where I should hold back, unlike last year when I basically took the entire race pretty conservatively because it was the first time at that distance.

So I signed up again.

And then I skipped far too many key workouts. And didn't work on my biking as much as I should have. And thought about dropping out of the race or selling my bib to someone else.

And then I really had a reality check and came to the conclusion that I was being a big baby.

So now I have 27 days to go, and I'm trying to cram about 8 weeks of training into less than 4 weeks. My swimming has improved tremendously since last year. (These enormous linebacker shoulders are good for something after all!!!) My running is probably about the same as it was last year. My biking... well... my biking is what it is.

But I'll go out there on August 16 and do the absolute best I can do on that day. If I finish with a faster time than last year, I'll be ecstatic. If I'm slower than last year, I'll be disappointed... but not devastated.

What would be devastating would be to not even try.

I am

the worst blogger EVER! Holy moley, it's been more than a month since I've written anything!

Not that I don't have anything to say... I have LOTS to say! (When don't I?) :) I just don't have any spare time to sit down and write anything intelligible.

Life is hectic and wonderful and crazy and wacky and unpredictable and fun and stressful and busy and joyous and sweet and bittersweet and full of twists and turns. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I love my job

I truly do.

Two years ago on Thursday, I took a huge leap of faith and left my high-paying job to come to a non-profit. It's a huge non-profit, but still. I took a $25,000 pay cut in exchange for a much shorter commute and less stress. I talked myself into it by reminding myself that you cannot put a pricetag on quality of life.

The first year was challenging. I didn't hit my stride right away. Despite the fact that I was using much the same skillset, I floundered a bit. I second-guessed my decision. I despaired over the lower and less frequent paychecks. I filled my extra time with more classes and clients at the Y, but I still felt unfulfilled.

But sometime in the past year, things started to change. I dove into more meaty projects at work. I started to make my mark here. I let myself relax about the money and started to bond more with my coworkers.

And much more importantly, I started to really live the mission. I now have much more contact with some of the children we serve here, and I love that contact. It absolutely makes my day when one of them calls out to me in the hallways or comes to visit me (even if, like today, his only purpose in visiting was to grub some candy off me). :) A few of the kids spontaneously hug me when they see me, and that fills me with joy.

I recently emailed a friend, "How could I possibly think about leaving here to work somewhere else for more money???" I couldn't. Not right now, anyway. I would miss my coworkers, even the ones who drive me a little nuts. I would feel guilt over leaving behind the mission -- to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

And I would not be able to forgive myself for walking away from these kids. These remarkable, resilient, intelligent, sensitive, wonderful kids.

I am so lucky. I have found my calling. How many people can say that?

Rain, rain go away

Why does God hate the Greeks?

I'm being facetious, of course, but it does seem to rain every stinking year for the Greek Festival. It rained in the early evening on Tuesday but then cleared up in time for the dinner rush at the Festival. In fact, we broke opening day records as far as money raised on Tuesday!

Maybe everyone knew the rest of the week was just going to get worse and worse... Wednesday was OK (again, early rain), but last night was a steady rain and today is even worse. After being so cold and wet for hours last night, I'm skipping tonight.

Tomorrow I'll be back in the bar tent to serve wine, beer, and ouzo to everyone who shows up. Come see me! I'll be in the bar closest to the gyro stand.

(And it's pronounced yee-row, not ji-row. If you're my friend, you simply MUST pronounce it correctly!) :)

PRs rock! :)

At Sunday's Mike's Run for Fame, IronHubby paced me to a brand-spanking-new 5K PR -- 23:12, which was 32 seconds faster than my previous PR on the same course. (Admittedly, it's a very fast and flat course.) Thank you, IronHubby!!!!

The first mile was fine. Easy, even. I thought to myself, "I could go faster." 7:30.

The second mile was endless. It seemed to take f.o.r.e.v.e.r. 7:30 again, amazingly.

The third mile wasn't as bad as the second, but my breathing was very laborious and heavy. 7:28

When I approached the finish and saw 23:03 on the clock, I said "Holy crap!" under my breath. And smiled for the camera.

(IronHubby is barely exerting himself. So not fair!)

23:12. For someone who is (a) old and (b) a fairly new runner, that pretty much rocks.

Apparently, though, I didn't race hard enough. Later on Sunday I biked on the trainer for 45 minutes, and on Monday I taught both an early morning outdoor boot camp class (4 miles) AND ran 3 miles after work in 24:06. Ummm, I probably shouldn't have had that much left in the tank.

Therefore, IronHubby has set a new goal for me: 22:57.

Rock on.

Race Reports

Sorry, Stephen! I didn't realize anyone was waiting for race reports.

Race 1 - Indoor Sprint Triathlon, May 16
500 meter swim, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run
This was my first indoor tri, and it was a blast! I got faster and felt stronger as the race wore on, which was very encouraging to me. Even better, I was the second female overall (out of only 21, but it still sounds pretty cool to say I came in second). :)

Race 2 - Delaware Marathon relay, May 17
6.55 miles, anchor leg of the marathon
I was concerned about racing two days in a row, something I'd never done before. On race day I was very sick to my stomach and completely sleep-deprived, as someone had tried to break into our house the night before and we were up with the responding police officers 'til 1 a.m. (Yes, I was home alone when it happened. No, the bad guy didn't get in. Yes, I was pretty freaked out about it.) IronHubby graciously swapped relay legs with me so I could rest for a bit before I had to run, so I got the cheers and the glory as I crossed the finish line. As a team, we ran a 3:40 marathon. Here I am approaching the finish line.

Upcoming races:
May 31 - Mike's Run for Fame 5K
June 13 - Thundergust Duathlon
July 4 - DRC Duathlon

Off to the races!

Race season officially begins this weekend for me!

Wheeeee!!!! :)

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Now I'm starting to worry

For most of the winter and definitely the spring so far, I've been in and out of a running slump. No mojo, not much consistency, low mileage, not loving it, etc. Race season officially starts this weekend, though, so I was getting a bit worried about my lack of motivation.

Then I did an absolutely amazing speed workout yesterday morning. I nailed my paces and was as consistent if not more consistent than ever.

4x400 in 1:39, 1:40, 1:39, and 1:37 (my goal pace was 1:44)
4x200 in :44, :44, :44, and :44 (my goal pace was :45)
4x100 in :19, :19, :18, and :19 (no goal in mind for these)

Talk about a mental boost!

And this morning my mojo stayed with me in the pool. I started out thinking about doing 3x500 in preparation for my indoor sprint tri this weekend, just to see what my 500 meter time might be on Saturday. When I started swimming, though, I felt strong. I felt fast. I felt a.m.a.z.i.n.g. in the water. I quickly scrapped my plan and decided to swim 1350 yards straight, the same workout I've been doing every Tuesday morning for several months, just to see if I was at or near PR pace. At one point, I even thought, "I know I can break 30 minutes for this distance. Maybe not today, but I know I can do it."

I figured I'd maybe break my PR of 30:42 today... by a few seconds. I knew it would be close.

29:52. 29:52!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A 50 second PR and my first sub-30 minute swim for that distance!! I could not be happier.

Except... Am I peaking too early??? I want yesterday's and today's successes this weekend! Now I am worried that I blew my load a few days too soon.

I guess I'll find out this weekend, huh? Meanwhile, I'll enjoy my endorphins. :)

Random Thoughts

- Will it ever stop raining? It's so dreary outside. I know we need rain, and I appreciate all the wonderful things it's doing for my lawn, my landscaping, the ecosystem, etc. But it's depressing. This weather is one of the major reasons I could never live in London. Or Seattle. ;)

- Despite being wet and cold, I had an absolute blast cheering with Lora at the Broad Street Run yesterday. I was so glad I wasn't racing. Cheering for and supporting the runners was so enjoyable, and it's something I don't make enough time to do. It felt good to be there for my friends and (hopefully) give them a little lift in the last 3/4 mile or so.

- For someone who claimed to not like running, I did a fair amount of it last week... about 20 miles. I think just removing the pressure of racing Broad Street made a big difference mentally. I ran because I wanted to last week, not because I felt like I had to.

- I've entered a six-week ab challenge on kickrunners.com. The challenge began today, and in six weeks (on June 15) everyone is supposed to post a picture of their abs. Anonymous votes will be cast, and a Best Abs winner will be crowned for the participating men and women. I have no hope of winning (especially after seeing another contestant's before shot... holy moly!!!). I'm just using this as motivation to really whip my core into shape so that I don't embarrass myself when I post my picture on June 15. The timing couldn't be more perfect; if the weather ever improves, it will officially be bathing suit season in a mere three weeks! Plus race season will be here very soon, and a strong core will be so beneficial in my training.

- Step 1 in my quest for better abs = less unhealthy snacks. Boo.

- I need some new tunes to motivate me. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

- Speaking of new tunes, if you're a fan of jazz standards, you MUST buy Swingin' on the Moon by Perry Danos tomorrow. He's my cousin, and I'm so excited for him!

- Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who took the time to comment on my last blog entry and/or call me to talk me through my funk. Your kind words meant the world to me!

So I decided I hate running

Or maybe running hates me. Either way, I'm not loving it right now.

Last year at this time I was motivated and ready for race season. I was loving my workouts, seeing regular improvement, and ready to take on the world.

This year, I find myself dreading my workouts. Unless I'm meeting someone, I have to force myself out the door. My paces are way off, my mileage is down, and I'm finding no joy in running.

Worse yet, I really have no desire to race. I was called a running diva for admitting this, but since I know I'm slower than last year, what's the point in racing? When I race, I want to PR. I want to be better than I was at that distance or on that course the last time I did it. Why else would I pay money to run??? Isn't that what racing is about? You against the clock. You against yourself. Pushing your limits and seeing if all the hard work of training paid off.

So maybe I am turning into a running diva. Maybe I have a bad attitude about this whole running thing. Maybe instead of lamenting the temporary loss of my running mojo, I should just back off and take some pressure off myself.

Maybe if I relax about it, the mojo will come back on its own.

I sure hope so.

Track workout

Well, as usual, I completely screwed up my pacing this morning. Coach made me do another ladder (even though I hate the ladder!).

The bad news - I went out way too fast on the first interval.
The good news - I didn't slow down after it, at least.

1600 = 7:18
1200 = 5:27 (7:18 pace again)
800 = 3:38 (7:16 pace)
400 = 1:44 (6:58 pace)

My legs felt dead the whole time. I was really struggling to finish the intervals and ended up skipping the sprints (200 and a few 100s).

Now I'm just wondering when my running mojo will come back to me. Soon, I hope! I'll need it on May 3 (and May 16, May 17, June 13, July 27, August 16, September 20, October 11, and November 8). Yes, those are all the dates I'm scheduled to race this year. Good grief. Addicted, much???

A post in three parts

PART I
LET'S GO, FLYERS!!!

PART II
LESSONS LEARNED DURING LAST NIGHT'S WORKOUT
Because I slept in a few minutes and missed my morning speed session on the track, I had to do a swim/run brick last night. Typically, I swim in the morning and run at night when I do that particular double, but my schedule was all kooky yesterday so I planned to reverse it. Well, I might have to reverse it every week, because I had The. Best. Swim. Of. My. Life. last night. No lie.

I again did 1350 yards of freestyle, but this week it felt effortless. I truly felt like I was gliding through the water. I counted my strokes, and I averaged 3-4 strokes LESS per length than normal. I really focused on my legs this time, too, and it obviously made a difference... I was nearly 2 minutes faster than last week and got a new PR for that distance! A 55-second PR! When you're only talking about a half hour of work, one minute is a pretty big deal.

Now, I know that 30:42 for a .75 mile swim is still laughably slow to most people, but for me that was a huge success. I was flying high when I exited the pool to begin my speedwork, sadly on the treadmill. I'll get to the track next week for sure!

Anyway, here's what I learned last night, in no particular order.

1. Never buy a new bathing suit when you are PMSing and/or bloated. You'll buy the only one that doesn't make you look like a fat whale... but then you'll spend half of your swim pulling it out of your crack and checking your cleavage to make sure it's not showing because the suit is too big for you.

2. I don't push myself hard enough on a treadmill. I could have and should have gone much faster, but I was so giddy from my swim (and so HOT after transitioning from the pool to the fitness center) that I settled for an average run workout.

3. I'll have to do another evening swim to determine if the time of day had anything to do with my success last night in the pool. Was I more buoyant in the evening after eating all day? Maybe I need to eat before a morning swim? Must test this.

4. I have to figure out a way to empty my bladder before/during a swim. OK, maybe not DURING if I'm in a pool, but once again I was desperate to pee after I was done... so I did a warm-up mile on the treadmill, my first 1200 interval, and then ran to the bathroom instead of taking a break before the next 1200.

5. After a great workout, I am much less likely to binge on junk food. It's like I'm so appreciative of what my body just did that I want to be good to it.

PART III
WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE
Let's hope I am able to continue lesson #5. I've joined the Weight Loss Challenge on kickrunners.com in order to get myself back down to where I was at the end of last summer. As of last week, I was close... darn close. But alas, the allure of my homebaked brownies, ice cream, and half-price Easter candy was too much for my feeble will-power, and I'm back up over 140 again. My goal is to get back to 137 as quickly as possible, but my more immediate goal is to lose 2 or 3 pounds before Broad Street.

Here's where it gets interesting. Maria has the same goal of 137, AND she has further challenged me that she'll get there before me.

Let the games begin.

Harry the K

RIP, Harry Kalas. We will miss you and your booming, distinctive voice. Phillies baseball will never be the same.

Aging sucks.

Yesterday IronHubby gave me a hug after Easter brunch. I had already taken off my shoes, but he hadn't... and he towered over me. There's only a 2" difference in our heights, so it was odd that he was so much taller. I said, half jokingly, "I'm shrinking," and asked him to measure me. He did.

69 inches. 5'9". I told him to measure me again, because I've been 5'10" since about sophomore year of college.

69 inches.

I've shrunk an inch! WHAT THE F???? I can't believe I'm old enough to have started shrinking. As if aging weren't bad enough... the gray hair, the wrinkles, the general droopiness, the invasive medical tests, the slowing metabolism, the fatigue, the hormones. Now I have to worry about getting shorter, too???

I've been fighting the aging process for a few years. I color my hair, baby my skin, work out like a maniac, eat well, take vitamins, and exercise my brain regularly. Obviously, it's not enough. I announced to IronHubby yesterday that I'm going to start taking and/or teaching Pilates again. Maybe improved posture will give me back that inch.

Characters

Yesterday I received six emails from concerned friends, warning me about a man who has been following female runners (in his car). When he was caught after two of the women called 911, he was found to have a knife and stockings in his front seat.

I had a tempo run on my schedule last night, and since I didn't get to do it until after 7 p.m. I decided to be smart and run on the treadmill at the Y.

The bad news - I was stuck on a treadmill.
The good news - I had an AWESOME 5 mile tempo run and felt like I could have gone another 2 or 3 miles at least.
The better news - Running on the treadmill for 40 minutes gave me the opportunity to be entertained by the characters surrounding me. Here they are in all their glory.

The Puncher, aka Rock-em Sock-em Robot - This guy literally punched his semi-clenched fists across his body the whole time he ran. Step and jab, step and jab, step and jab.

The Leaner - I've seen this girl before. I think she's a recent UD grad. Her gait is really awkward -- she looks like a pony just learning to walk! -- but she seems like a fairly strong runner based on how frequently and how long she runs. She always has the treadmill set at 8 minute miles, and she leans to the left the entire time, almost to the point of accidentally stepping off the belt and onto the side of the machine. She looks like she's in pain, quite frankly. Compare her to...

The Glider - IronHubby's high school crush! She's an amazing runner. She makes it look effortless. She too ran at an 8 minute pace last night, but she looked as though she was barely exerting herself. Her feet barely came off the belt. Poetry in motion.

Shoulder Man - My neck and shoulders hurt just looking at this guy. He was a bundle of stress. His shoulders almost touched his earlobes! I wanted to go behind him and push his shoulders down. Relax, dude!

Mr. I'm Barely Running - This guy was going so slowly that he may as well have been walking. I think he wants to be a runner but has no idea how to push himself, so he sets the treadmill at a slow speed and forces himself to add a little hop to his step to make it look like he's actually running. He also reads the newspaper the whole time he's on the treadmill... yeah, really not exerting himself much!

Posture Girl - She came dangerously close to falling off the back of the treadmill. Her posture was completely rigid, and she was going a little too fast for her own capabilities. After a few minutes, she wisely held onto the console until it was time to slow down.

And finally,

Ashtray Boy - Somehow, the stinkiest people in the gym ALWAYS end up next to me. This guy had the stench of cigarettes oozing out of every pore while he ran. Blech.

Hmmm, maybe my next blog entry will be entitled "My Many Faults." First on the list will be cattiness...

Diving in

I realized this morning that I approach life the same way I approach swimming; I dive right in.

At the lap pool, I jump in and begin swimming immediately. At a recreational pool, I jump in and immediately go under. At the beach, I don't dip a toe in the ocean, then wade up to my ankles, then my knees... all the while acclimating myself to the water temperature. No, I am the fool who runs in as fast and as far as I can before diving under a wave (and most likely losing my bathing suit in the process... good thing the Atlantic Ocean is so dark and murky, or I'd have been arrested for indecent exposure many, many times).

That's how I live my life, too. I jump in with both feet. I weigh the consequences of my actions, sure. I'm no dummy. But once I make a decision to do something, I do it with gusto, with 100% of my being.

Sometimes I jump into something I shouldn't have. Sometimes I hit the bottom. Sometimes I'm left gasping for air.

But I always, always, always come back up to the surface.

Take the poll!

Should I get a tattoo? If I did, it would look something like this.

Or maybe I would separate the images like this.

I'd want the moon to be a little smaller, though. The sun is definitely the prominent image I want to feature.

I've been thinking about it off and on through the years. Lately, I've been thinking about it quite a bit. I think it's time.

Whatever I do, it will be small. It will be tasteful. And it will be viewable by invitation only. :) I don't want it to be visible when I'm dressed for work or an event. It's for me. It's private. (Yeah, real private... That's why I'm asking everyone in Internetland for their advice...)

What say you? Vote on the poll and let me know what you think.

Beauty

This is the sight I was treated to this morning during my outdoor boot camp class:

They were crossing the street from one yard to another. They then cut through two adjoining back yards to get to the woods across the street. They stood very still and looked at us several times.

They literally stopped us in our tracks. They were so beautiful and graceful.

Seeing them made my whole morning.

I'm old, but I'm slow

We used to say that in volleyball tournaments when I was, oh, 22 or 23. Good grief, I had no clue...

Anyway, when we'd play younger (collegiate) teams in the playoffs, we'd jokingly tell them, "We may be old... but we're slow! Watch out!" It always got a laugh.

Sadly, it's becoming more and more true. Take, for example, this week's workouts.

TUESDAY - Mile repeats on an indoor track
I got progressively slower and slower with each mile, and my legs felt heavier and heavier. It was almost a death march at the end. 7:18 (a little too fast), 7:36 (better, but a little slower than I wanted), and 7:46 (BLECH!!!).

THIS MORNING - A steady 3/4 mile swim
I never really felt as though I got into a rhythm today, and my splits clearly showed it. I was nearly 3 minutes off my PR for the full distance, even though I constantly reminded myself of all the tips and techniques I've been learning in my swim clinic and in my own reading.

I know it's just a funk. I haven't been eating as well as I should, and my schedule this week has been insanely busy. It still is frustrating, though.

Monday, March 23, 2009

Can someone please tell me why I'm awake right now?

This week is officially The Suck. I arrived at work today at 6:50 a.m. and got home at 9:15 p.m. (I did take a break to work out, but still. A 7 a.m. meeting and 7 p.m. meeting on the same day? Bleh.)

Tomorrow I have a 7:30 a.m. meeting.

Wednesday I'm teaching at 6 a.m. because I traded classes this week.

Thursday I have to make a presentation at a 6 p.m. meeting after working a regular day.

And Friday? An 8 a.m. meeting... 2 hours south of home in beautiful Seaford. (Please note the sarcasm.)

Somewhere in there I also have to train two clients at the Y, take care of my pets, see two shows -- Spamalot and Blithe Spirit -- with my mom, work out, prepare a mailing for my high school class, pick up and deliver an auction prize for a fundraiser Friday, and other assorted errands and responsibilities.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. G'night.

A starting point

Last night I did my first ladder workout in about a year and a half. The ladder scares me. I'd much rather try to maintain a consistent pace over several repeats of the same distance versus increase my pace as the distances get shorter, but I figured I had to see where I was starting this racing season so off I went to the track.

My ladder was as follows:
1600
1200
800
400
200

All in all, I did 6.5 miles including running to and from the track. I knew the 1200 would be my downfall... and I was right.

1600 - 7:18 - 7:18 pace (duh)
1200 - 5:32 - 7:25 pace (drat!)
800 - 3:32 - 7:06 pace (better)
400 - 1:42 - 6:50 pace (how on earth did I ever run a whole mile that fast??)
200 - :45 - 6:02 pace (love me some 200s!)

At the end I did one final lap, sprinting the straightaways (:15 and :16) and walking the turns before heading back to the Y.

I have my work cut out for me, but at least now I know what I need to work on. Next time I do a ladder, that 1200 will be below 5:15. Just watch.

An Irish Prayer

May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

Blue

My nails were blue. :)

Who got it right?

Random Thoughts

- Not only does swimming make me ridiculously hungry, but it also makes me pee like a racehorse for several hours. Any idea why? Does being submerged in water release some primal urge to urinate??

- Is it possible that after one swimming clinic, my swimming has already improved? Or am I imagining things?

- Daylight Savings Time rocks. Speedwork on the track tonight!

- I do not need a sandwich. Thank you anyway.

- I still hate my stainless steel water bottles (she says after yet again spilling water on herself while trying to drink out of one).

- Venus is in retrograde this month. Whatever that means. :) (Actually, a friend sent me a very informative and enlightening email that explains what it means... and it's scarily accurate.)

- I need to earn more money. I don't know how (legally), but I need to. And soon.

- I like my darker hair. It suits me.

- Random Thoughts are fun to write. :)

I saw Mike this morning

He came to me in a dream. Or maybe I had one of those weird out-of-body experiences that people talk about. Or maybe I'm still a bit tipsy from too much Grey Goose consumed in his honor last night.

No matter, I saw him. I got to talk to him. He'd been revived on the one year anniversary of his death to provide us with a chance to talk to him. I asked him what heaven was like, and his reply was, "This was heaven. Being here with all of you. My work with the kids. Don't you get it? Earth is heaven."

I told him about what had been going on with me in the one year since I'd seen him, mainly about my nose. As I talked about it, he kept showering my face and especially my nose with kisses. Not sexual or romantic kisses. All I felt was pure love from him.

After a weird and random series of dream events (people from other areas of my life showing up, suddenly being in a house instead of the hospital, a very drunk and angry IronHubby, and tearfully finding out that Mike was going to be let go again), I found him again and suddenly was in a car in Rehoboth with him, my friend Resha, and a small child (I don't know whose... whoever was driving the car). I said I had one more question for him. Did he see God when he died? Was it like people say, with bright, comforting white light and God and your loved ones calling to you, welcoming you?

He said, "Oh no. Nothing like that. It's... kinda boring."

Now, this is completely contrary to what I believe. I believe there's more after this life. I believe heaven is a joyous and happy place, free from pain, from suffering, from regrets, from sorrow. I believe you do reconnect with loved ones who have gone before you.

However, I also believe that messages and lessons come to us from all directions, and that part of our job on this earth is to listen and be receptive to them. So here's what I think Mike was sent to tell me.

Live every day to its fullest
Appreciate what you have
Tell people how you feel about them
Do meaningful work, and be proud of what you do
Never take anything for granted

Thanks, Mike, for coming back to me. I miss you all the time, but I now know that you really are still here with us.

Iron Mike

One year ago today IronHubby and I rushed to the hospital to sit with Andrea, Iron Mike's girlfriend. Because I worked with Mike, I knew he hadn't been feeling well -- truth be told, he'd been in HORRIBLE pain the day before. I called Andrea to see how he was doing, and when she told us how serious it was, we immediately canceled all appointments for the rest of the day to keep her company.

Because that's all we thought we were doing... keeping her company while Mike was undergoing some testing on his leg. We never dreamed we'd arrive at the hospital to hear words like "dire" and "extremely grave" from the doctors. We never expected to spend the next 14 hours in the waiting room as the situation grew worse and worse. We never expected to meet Mike's out-of-town brother and sister as they rushed to his bedside as well.

We certainly didn't anticipate that it would be the last time we'd ever see him.

Mike was the healthiest, fittest person I've ever met. His work ethic in the gym and on the roads was unparalleled, and (despite his junk food diet) it showed.

Mike also was a thoughtful listener, a loyal friend, and a heck of a lot of fun. I will forever be grateful to him for taking IronHubby under his wing and introducing him (and, indirectly, me) to the wonderful world of triathlon. He accepted IronHubby into his inner-circle of training buddies, mentored him, and, when IronHubby outgrew that group, gently pushed him toward a more advanced training group. He welcomed us into his home too many times to count and helped me change careers two years ago. He was an absolute gem of a person, and it's simply not fair that he's gone.

I miss him terribly and know he's smiling down on us this weekend.

A new adventure?

Several years ago, I looked into bellydancing lessons. Yes, bellydancing. :) The scheduling didn't work out, and it got filed away under Things I'd Like To Do Someday, along with swimming with dolphins, meeting Bono, living in New York City, running a marathon, and other assorted wish-list items.

Last night Mom and I saw Bellydance Superstars at the Grand Opera House.

It wasn't what we expected. It was a very modern, multi-cultural exploration of belly dance with elaborate costumes and choreography. The women were, on the whole, phenomenally beautiful. I mean, check out these two:

Stunning, right? Who wouldn't want to look like that??

My favorites were these four, though:

They were like the bad girls of bellydance with their tattoos and piercings. I told Mom they were the outlaw gypsy cousins. :) Since I'm a gypsy from a long line of gypsies, they appealed to me.

There was literature available before and after the show, and I was inspired enough to take a few pamphlets, one of which advertised Beginner Bellydance lessons. Hmmmmmm, a phone call is in my very near future... and those lessons might be, too!

Why the heck not?

Getting my mojo back

It's March. Spring has to be around the corner, right, despite the 8 inches of snow currently covering my world? Doesn't matter. I feel as though I'm truly getting my mojo back. Why? Many reasons, really.

I swam this morning for the first time in 5 weeks. It was a shortie -- just half a mile -- and my nose definitely did not like the pressure of breathing underwater, but still. I swam! I remembered this morning how much I love being in the water. I feel so free, so at peace in the water. No sounds other than my own breathing. No sights except the water itself (and inside, the line I'm following below me). No one to talk to. No tunes to distract me. Just me and the water.

Speaking of tunes, I have new U2 tunes to inspire and move me. (Note the new Thought of the Day, taken from a song on the new album. Deep. And so appropriate for me.)

My weight is creeping down again. Of the 5+ pounds I re-gained, I've re-lost 3 and am this close to going below a huge marker. Yes, it's arbitrary and stupid to focus on a number, but when you're about to dip below a mark you've seen only once in the past 12 years, it's a pretty big deal.

I start speedwork again tonight, and I have a few races picked out: a 5K in Philly on March 22 and a very hilly 10K on April 19. My 10K PR is several years old, and I don't know if the Buckley's course is one I can possibly PR on. I'll try, though.

Daylight savings time starts again this weekend, which will make my after-work runs MUCH more likely to be outside! Yeah! No more treadmill unless it's completely necessary. And even better, once it gets just a little bit warmer, I can bike outside again.

Dad is settling in nicely in his new apartment. Ultimately, the move is going to be so good for him. I'm excited for this new chapter in his life.

Work is insanely busy, but I'm the weirdo who actually likes being insanely busy. So I even have my work mojo going for me. :)

There is so much to be happy about.

It doesn't come out 'til tomorrow...

... but I'm on my way to get it RIGHT NOW!

U2's No Line on the Horizon. Can't freaking wait to listen!!! Looks like tonight's workout will be done on the bike trainer with the stereo CRANKING. (Warm-up to include hauling the bike and the trainer up from the basement.) :)

Disbelief

I think I might be sick.

I came home tonight to a message from my Dad, sounding urgent. When I called him back, he told me my former boss was in trouble for embezzling money. I said, "No way... wrong guy," and looked it up for myself online.

It's true. My former boss and dear friend, a man whose honor I will defend to the death, was suspended yesterday for what is being termed "unauthorized bonuses" he paid to himself and several employees.

Here's what's really going on. There is a small but very vocal faction of people who are on a witchhunt and have been for several years. Their dishonesty and backstabbing led to the resignations of two key people -- one of them being me -- and now they are discrediting a man who has served that community with distinction for more than 20 years. Even when he's cleared of wrongdoing -- not if, when -- his reputation will forever be in question. His children will have to face whispers and gossip at school. His judgment will be called into question no matter what he does, even when it's the right call.

It's a witchhunt. Pure and simple.

I just don't understand why people are mean. What is missing in their lives that they feel the need to bring someone else down? Rodney King was mocked all those years ago, but he was right. Why CAN'T we all get along? Sometimes we disagree and see things differently, but why does that make it OK to ruin someone's life with false allegations and accusations?

If my former boss needs me, I will drop everything to be there for him. I will proudly stand next to him. He is my friend. He is a good person.

He doesn't deserve this.

Go me!

So Monday morning I posted this week's fitness tip about calories in vs. calories out.

A few days later (Wednesday?), some big study was published and carried in all the major news outlets reporting the same exact thing.

Do I know my stuff or WHAT?? I rule! :)

Funniest running bet ever

I saw a friend of IronHubby's at the Y the other night. He was limping a bit, so I asked if he was OK and chatted for a minute. Even though he was in obvious pain, he said he had to keep running because he was on a plan. I must have looked confused, because he asked, "You didn't hear about the bet???" I hadn't, so he explained.

His wife Carol is a pretty good runner. She's consistently a little bit faster than me (probably comparable to Maria). OK, better than pretty good. :) Anyway, Joe bet her in November that he could beat her in a 5K in June. Since November, he's been working his butt off, literally. He's lost 20 pounds and has gone from a 29 minute 5K to 24:30 so far (all on a treadmill... more on that later). Meanwhile, Carol's typical 5K time is in the 22-23 minute range.

Here's the funny part.

If JOE wins the bet, Carol has to get implants. (!!!!!!!!)
If CAROL wins, Joe has to get a part-time job and donate every penny he makes to charity.

Go Carol, go!!!!

When I told IronHubby about the bet, of course he cracked up (don't get any ideas, buddy!). He said, "But Joe's time is on a treadmill! That isn't comparable to outside. Did you explain to him?" I replied, "I'm not telling him nothing! I want her to win!!!"

Let's start our own bet. I am willing to bet $20 that IronHubby calls Joe to offer his coaching services for free. :)

NYC, here I come!

This weekend will be good for my soul. I'm going to NYC to see my favoritest favorite fitness presenter (and my favoritest favorite gay man), Calvin Wiley. Calvin is launching his new fitness program -- which is of course called Calvinography -- and I'm going to the launch party Saturday night. On Sunday I'm going to two classes at Reebok, THE nicest gym in the city according to my friend Jason who teaches at several gyms. (Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon have been in his Spinning classes at Reebok, among other celebs.)

Yay! Fun, fitness, shopping, and NEW YORK, my favorite city in the world. Can't stinking wait!

I'm going to need a lot more Advil

Yesterday, in what can only be termed a freak accident, a friend's daughter elbowed me square in the nose. Direct hit.

I was sitting on the steps when it happened, writing a check for the Girl Scout cookies they were dropping off. She saw one of the cats on the stairs behind me and tried to squeeze past me to pet her. As she went by, somehow her elbow struck out to the side, hitting me right where it would hurt the most.

The tears were instant and uncontrollable. I sat there weeping for at least 5-6 minutes. I felt badly for reacting so emotionally, but the pain was beyond belief. I iced and iced and iced, but this morning I'm very swollen... so much so that I cancelled my boot camp class because I wasn't sure running was a great idea.

So it's back to the doctor I go (hopefully). And back to the drug store to stock up on Advil, since I took my last three at 5:30 this morning.

:(

Dude!

My boy Mikey had a 5-point game last night -- 2 goals and 3 assists. TOTAL stud!

Let's go, Flyers!!!

Another thing I was recently reminded of...

I love gay men.

I adore them. I love how they flatter you and don't expect anything in return. I love their passion for life. I love their sense of style and personal appearance. I love that they can give me fashion advice.

Yes, I am a Fag Hag. And I'm damn proud of it.

Things I learned (or re-learned) this weekend

1. If you are going to wear a super skimpy outfit to a party, you'd better be prepared to fend off unwanted advances and groping from lecherous men.

2. Men's boxer briefs are really quite comfortable.

3. Standing in 4" heels for six hours, however, is not.

4. Paranoia about sun exposure can ruin an otherwise lovely run on a beautiful winter day.

5. The people who come to my Monday morning class totally rock.

6. Allergies are The Suck.

7. Even when you haven't heard from someone in a long time, you are still on their mind.

So many people to thank

This is most likely my last day at home. I'll work part of the day tomorrow and return to a regular work schedule on Wednesday.

Since I'm home being reflective, I want to thank several people for really stepping up the past week.

- IronHubby, for taking most of Tuesday off and waking up at an ungodly early hour to take me to the hospital

- Mom, for rushing over after work Tuesday to sit with me, taking off from work Wednesday, and visiting twice more over the week with homemade soup and stew, soft foods (pudding! jello!), and her upbeat spirit

- My brother, for calling every. single. day, several times a day, to check on me

- Larry, Heather, Maria, Lori, and Lora for sending a beautiful and healthy edible bouquet of fruit

- Andrea, for making a quiche and stopping by for a nice visit

- Laura, for offering to bring me a black & white milkshake (I should have taken her up on it!)

- Karen, for showing up with soup and Girl Scout cookies

- Jackie, for washing my hair twice for me since I still cannot get my face wet

- Dad, for offering to come over and make my favorite Greek soup for me

And many thanks to everyone else who called, texted, emailed, commented here, and facebooked me over the past week. It's so true that you find out who your real friends are in a time of crisis or need. Your friendship means the world to me!!

A long, strange trip

This recovery has been weird. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this.

Tuesday:
Very out of it, as already reported. In and out of sleep most of the day. In pain.

Wednesday:
Almost no pain, but the swelling and bruising started.

Thursday:
More pain (????), darker bruising, lots more swelling.

Today:
Less pain again, but I'm dizzy. The bruising is turning yellow, and the swelling is pretty much the same as yesterday. I feel the need to lie down again soon; every time I stand up, I nearly pass out.

With the bruising and swelling, I am a picture of loveliness. :)

UPDATE
Saturday:
Less bruising, less swelling. On the road to recovery!

I'm OK!

Hello hello.

I survived the surgery. Yesterday I was VERY out of it, groggy, drugged, sleepy, etc. The pain was pretty intense, especially when the meds were wearing off but it wasn't yet time to take more.

Today, though, I feel pretty OK. Not too much pain, but the swelling and bruising have begun. Unfortunately, the swelling is causing some discomfort at the top (bridge) of my nose where the break and re-break occured, but it's tolerable.

So far, so good I guess. I'll know more Monday when the splint comes off. Eek!

One more sleep

Tomorrow's the big day. Finally! After a five week delay involving two rescheduled dates, my surgery will finally take place tomorrow.

What's funny is that I'm not as terrified as I was five weeks ago. I'm more... anxious. That's not the right word, but it's as close as I can get to describing how I feel. I've been so overwhelmed with family drama and work commitments that I haven't really had time to focus on myself, including my surgery. Life has been so hectic that I'm actually looking forward to the surgery, simply because it means I HAVE TO relax and do nothing for about a week.

I know my logic is flawed, but then again so I am. :)

So, tomorrow's the big day when a perfectly nice man will break my face on purpose, with my permission.

One more sleep.
